Welcome to the Coroner Case File Project Wiki!

Introduction

Welcome to the Coroner Case File Project! The University of Pittsburgh's Archives Service Center has conducted a preservation project with support from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission to make the Coroner Case Files of Allegheny County more accessible to researchers and the public. The case files are in the form of tri-folded paper documents filling close to 800 cubic foot boxes. This extensive documentation of Pittsburgh history contains evidence of the industrial accidents, homicides, suicides, epidemics, and the myriad causes of Allegheny County citizen's suspicious, unusual, or sudden deaths between 1887 and 1973.  A student workforce has contributed greatly to the task of preserving and identifying the records, and they have transferred their knowledge of the records on this site. Check in frequently for more news on the future projects!

Working together using this wiki

This wiki is a shared effort by interns working on the Allegheny County Coroner Case File Project at the University of Pittsburgh. Interns are not only preserving these important records, but they are also gleaning social and historical information from a primarily untapped resource.  This online effort will allow the interns to contribute to the overall understanding of these records and to promote further scholarship by bringing to light the personal stories, points of interest, and the unusual and suspicious deaths in Pittsburgh's history.
